Khazanah and Yayasan Hasanah pledge RM7.5 million to help flood victims

Following the recent statement by the Malaysian Finance Minister, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz in the aftermath of the floods that hit the country, Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”) would like to announce a contribution of RM5 million to help support immediate relief efforts in the following days. Its foundation Yayasan Hasanah will also pledge to contribute RM2.5 million to support the relief efforts. Alongside the monetary contribution, Yayasan Hasanah is also working together with its partner NGOs to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the victims.

The contribution will be channeled through the Government-Linked Companies (“GLC”) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (“GLIC”) Disaster Response Network (“GDRN”), which is currently coordinating GLC and GLIC assistance to the those in urgent need. The GDRN is managed by a joint-secretariat led by Yayasan Hasanah and Yayasan Telekom Malaysia.

Dato’ Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Managing Director of Khazanah, said: “We’ve seen how the floods have caused major disruptions to so many lives, devastating communities across the country. These are challenging times for many Malaysians. In responding to the situation, Khazanah together with Yayasan Hasanah have mobilised various efforts on the ground to support and help the victims as we aid the Government’s effort to ensure the fast recovery of the households affected. We will do all that is possible, and are encouraged that Malaysians from all walks of life have come together to lend a helping hand and support those affected by the floods.”

Dato’ Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah, said: “We appreciate the aid and fast response by the Government, and Yayasan Hasanah will continue to collaborate with various agencies and NGOs in helping individuals affected by the floods. As Co-Secretariat for GDRN together with Yayasan TM, I’m also pleased to report that various GLCs and GLICs are already on the ground to provide coordinated and streamlined humanitarian assistance to the victims. We are also working closely with NGOs across the county to assist those in need.”

The financial contributions will be used for emergency responses such as logistics and providing food and hygiene kits for families and children. Khazanah, Yayasan Hasanah and our partners will also provide medical aid including sanitisers, rapid test kits and

masks. During the recovery stage, the financial contributions will be used for cleaning equipment, providing basic home necessities, back to school kits and supporting volunteers.

In the past, Khazanah has extended its support for various relief and construction efforts spearheaded by GDRN in response to major floods in Kelantan, Pahang and Johor in 2013 and 2016. In 2020, Khazanah also contributed RM20 million through the GDRN to support relief efforts in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
