Kuala Lumpur, 23 May 2026 — Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”) hit another milestone today with the opening of the Pejabat Pos Besar Lama (“PPBL”), Block 2 of the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad (“BSAS”) Complex. This forms part of the broader efforts to revitalise Kuala Lumpur’s historic civic core under Khazanah’s DanaWarisan, within the wider Warisan Kuala Lumpur (“Warisan KL”) initiative.

The opening of the PPBL marks Khazanah’s third successful heritage restoration in Kuala Lumpur, following the reopening of BSAS Block 1 and Seri Negara.

In conjunction with its opening, YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department paid a visit accompanied by YBhg Datuk Seri TPr Fadlun Mak Ujud, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, and Dato’ Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional.

Dato’ Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Managing Director of Khazanah said, “The reopening of Pejabat Pos Besar Lama reflects Khazanah’s commitment to strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s role not just as a point of transit, but as a destination in its own right. By activating heritage assets, we are creating more reasons for Malaysians and tourists alike to stay, spend, and engage – while supporting local businesses, strengthening Malaysia’s cultural identity, and contributing to broader economic activity. This forms the cornerstone of Khazanah’s Connectivity pillar in our Malaysia Investment Strategy.”

“Anchored in Malaysia’s rich culinary traditions, including elements that reflect the country’s broader intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, PPBL demonstrates how heritage can be made relevant, inclusive, and commercially sustainable for today and generations to come.”

Once the city’s principal General Post Office, PPBL has been brought to life as a heritage-led culinary destination celebrating Malaysia’s rich food traditions. Central to this is the “Malaysia’s Breakfast Culture” which was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. The space brings together a curated mix of eight locally rooted brands – Niko Neko, A Piece of Malaysia (APOM), Oriental Kopi, Tannin Hill, Banglo 289, Saudagar, Ruai, and Kongsi Kreatif – offering a vibrant, accessible experience centred on food, culture, and community.

During the launch, members of the media were also invited and given an exclusive tour of the restored building and its curated tenant offerings, experiencing firsthand the revitalised space and its diverse offerings.

Inclusive Public Spaces Anchored in National History & Heritage

PPBL was designed in 1902 by Arthur Benison Hubback, then Assistant Architect of the Federal Public Works Department and was opened in July 1907. For much of the 20th century, the building served as Kuala Lumpur’s main General Post Office. It housed public postal counters, mail sorting facilities, telegraph services, the Savings Bank and Central Accounts Office, as well as postal headquarters functions. Over time, as the postal system expanded, several functions were relocated with the main postal operations moving to the Dayabumi Complex in the mid-1980s.

From 1990, the building entered a new phase of use by the judiciary, providing additional court and office space, including for the Court of Appeal. It was adapted as part of the wider court complex, with a bridge constructed in the 1990s to connect it to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad across Jalan Mahkamah Tinggi. After the full relocation of judicial functions in 2007, the building was occupied by various Government agencies until it was taken over by Aset Warisan Empat Sdn. Bhd., a special purpose vehicle owned by Khazanah, with conservation works commencing in February 2025.

The conservation and adaptive reuse of PPBL focused on careful investigation, preservation of original materials and architectural elements where possible, and allowing the building’s layered history to remain as its key feature. Crucial elements such as clay brickwork, plaster details, repetitive arches, hexagonal staircases and selected judicial-era interventions were carefully retained, balancing heritage authenticity with structural integrity, visitor safety, and contemporary building performance.

As part of the wider Warisan KL initiative, Khazanah has been entrusted to preserve and rejuvenate eight significant Malaysian historic buildings, including the Bukit Carcosa cluster (Seri Negara and Carcosa), with a pedestrian bridge linking to Perdana Botanical Gardens, and the BSAS Complex comprising Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Pejabat Pos Besar Lama, the former Kuala Lumpur High Court, Panggung Bandaraya, the old FMS Survey Office and the National Textile Museum. Restoration of the remaining buildings will see phased completion in the coming years.

“Warkah Untuk Malaysia”: Bringing Malaysians Together through Shared Stories and Aspirations

In conjunction with the opening of PPBL, Khazanah will also launch the “Warkah Untuk Malaysia (Letters to Malaysia)” campaign, an initiative that invites Malaysians to share their hopes, memories, and aspirations for the nation through handwritten postcards and digital submissions.

Running from 23 May to 31 July 2026, the campaign encourages visitors to participate at designated writing stations across selected locations, including PPBL, or via online platforms. Through these contributions, the initiative seeks to bring people together through shared stories, reflecting the spirit of unity, hope, and national pride.

Selected submissions and user-generated content will be curated into commemorative videos and reels to be released during the Merdeka and Malaysia Day period (31 August to 16 September 2026), capturing the collective voice and aspirations of Malaysians.

PPBL will be open to the public from 23 May 2026 onwards, from 10.00 AM to 10.00 PM. The latest details on opening hours, tenants, programmes, and visitor information are available at www.bsas.com.my.
