Vibrant Communities

As a long-term investor, Khazanah’s role extends beyond portfolio performance to the broader development of communities across Malaysia.

We work through our execution arms to strengthen social outcomes, enhance liveability and support the development of inclusive and resilient communities.

Our approach focuses on enabling ecosystems that bring together public, private and community stakeholders. Through initiatives spanning urban development, environmental conservation, research and cultural spaces, we contribute to improving the quality of life while reinforcing Malaysia’s social and economic foundations.

These efforts are delivered through dedicated platforms that operate at the intersection of policy, community engagement and place-making, each contributing to a more connected and vibrant society.

Yayasan Hasanah

Khazanah established Yayasan Hasanah on 1 July 2015 as its impact-based foundation, extending its mandate beyond financial returns into broader societal development. It was created to invest not only in programmes, but in the systems and people that sustain long-term community outcomes, ensuring that development remains inclusive and accessible. Funded by Khazanah and operating as a grant-making foundation, Hasanah channels resources across five focus areas: education, community development, environment, arts and public spaces, and knowledge, while also convening stakeholders to co-develop solutions grounded in local realities.

Yayasan Khazanah was established in 2006 to advance Khazanah’s role in developing Malaysia’s human capital by identifying and nurturing individuals with the potential to contribute meaningfully to national progress. It operates through a structured model combining scholarships, leadership development, mentorship, and real-world exposure, equipping scholars with both academic capability and leadership readiness. Through this approach, it builds a pipeline of talent positioned to take on roles across key sectors.

Khazanah opened Taman Tugu in September 2018 as a conservation-led initiative, transforming a degraded site into a 66-acre urban rainforest park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It was created as a deliberate alternative to commercial development, prioritising environmental preservation, public access and long-term urban sustainability. The park operates through ecological restoration, conservation of native biodiversity and community engagement, supported by partnerships with public agencies and civil society organisations.

Khazanah established Think City in 2009, initially to support the conservation of George Town following its UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription, with a broader mission to make cities more liveable, sustainable and inclusive. It has since evolved from a grant manager into a regional urban practice organisation, operating across placemaking, resilience, urban analytics, and conservation. Its model integrates research, design and implementation, working with public, private and community stakeholders to deliver place-based urban regeneration. Catalytic funding support through Yayasan Hasanah has contributed to its expansion and community-focused initiatives.

Khazanah established the Khazanah Research Institute in 2014 as an independent, non-profit policy research institute dedicated to advancing evidence-based policymaking in Malaysia. Built on the premise that good policy starts with good research, it operates across research, convening and advocacy to generate analysis, engage stakeholders and translate findings into actionable policy recommendations. Its independence allows it to contribute objective insights across a wide range of socio-economic issues.
