Tan Sri Dato' Azman bin Hj. Mokhtar
Tan Sri Dato' Azman bin Hj. Mokhtar was appointed as Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional in June 2004.
Between 1994 and 1998, he was a Director and Head of Research for Union Bank of Switzerland in Malaysia. Between 1998 and 2002, he was Director and Head of Research at Salomon Smith Barney in Malaysia. From 2002 until May 2004, he was the Managing Director of BinaFikir Sdn. Bhd.
Tan Sri Dato' Azman Mokhtar graduated with distinction in M. Phil in Development Studies from Darwin College, Cambridge University, United Kingdom as a Chevening scholar. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, United Kingdom and is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder. He also holds a graduate diploma in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur.
Mohammad Zainal Shaari – Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer
Mohammad Zainal Shaari was appointed as Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer of Khazanah Nasional in February 2006. He joined Khazanah Nasional in October 2004 as its Director in the Managing Director's Office and Chief Risk Officer. Mohammad Zainal is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Malaysia and subsequent to that he was Executive Director at BinaFikir. Mohammad Zainal is primarily in charge of the operations and internal management of Khazanah Nasional, in addition to specific duties in investment management and monitoring, risk management and various strategy functions in the Managing Director’s Office.
Ganen Sarvananthan – Executive Director, Investments
Ganen Sarvananthan was appointed as Khazanah Nasional’s Executive Director, Investments in February 2006. Ganen joined Khazanah Nasional in October 2004 as a Director, Investments. He is a barrister-at-law and a member of Lincoln's Inn, London, having graduated with LLB (Hons) from University College London, United Kingdom. Prior to joining Khazanah Nasional, he was Director, Equity Capital Markets at UBS Investment Bank, Hong Kong having previously served UBS Investment Banking/Corporate Finance Departments in London and Singapore. Ganen is primarily responsible in overseeing new investments and divestments in targeted sectors and geographies.
Ben Chan – Executive Director, Investments
Ben is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (with merit) from the University of New South Wales. Ben joined the investment industry shortly after he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Between 1992 and 1996, Ben researched the China and Hong Kong markets with Cazenove & Co and ING Barings in Hong Kong, where he was the Head of China Research. He returned to Malaysia in 1996 and served as Director of Research with several investment houses, covering the Malaysia and Singapore markets
Ismael Fariz Ali – Executive Director, Investments
Ismael Fariz Ali was appointed as the Executive Director, Investments at Khazanah Nasional Bhd. in September 2007. Prior to this, Fariz was Managing Director of a technology venture capital firm, which he co-founded in 2000.In his seven years leading the firm, Fariz was involved in setting up several venture funds ranging from angel- and early-stage technology funds to mezzanine-stage funds.
Prior to that, Fariz was attached to a Malaysian investment bank for 16 years with experience ranging from corporate finance, privatisations, mergers and acquisitions, investment advisory and valuations, to infrastructure project finance, restructuring, and corporate strategy advice. Fariz has served on several Boards including Celcom Bhd, ValueCap Sdn Bhd, Pharmaniaga Bhd. and RHB Bank Bhd. He is also a council member of the Malaysian Venture Capital Development Council (MVCDC).
Fariz holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Iowa and a BA in Economics & Business Administration from Knox College, Illinois, where he was also a teaching assistant in Computer Science.
Michael Jude Fernandez – Executive Director, Investments
Michael Jude Fernandez joined Khazanah Nasional as Executive Director, Investments Division in April 2008. Prior to Khazanah, Michael was an Executive Director and Member of the Board of Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NPIL), the second largest pharmaceutical healthcare company in India, and was in charge of its custom manufacturing business group. Among his key achievements were the acquisition and integration of businesses in the UK and Canada with sales of USD200 million, developed the organisation with a well-working matrix structure, implemented a new EVA-driven incentive structure and established strategic business units. Prior to NPIL, Michael spent 13 years as a consultant with McKinsey and Company. He was part of the leadership group of the pharmaceutical & healthcare practice in Asia/ Global and leader of select high profile public policy & retail work in India/ Asia. Michael obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (MBA) from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta in 1993 and BSc. (Hons) in Economics from St Xavier’s College, Calcutta University in 1991.
Tunku Mahmood Fawzy bin Tunku Muhiyiddin – Executive Director, Investments
Fawzy Muhiyiddin was appointed as Khazanah Nasional’s Director, Investments in May 2007. He holds a BA (Hon) degree in Business Studies from the Polytechnic of Central London, an MBA from Warwick University and a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is also a member of the Malaysian Institute of Management. Fawzy has an alumnus relationship with the Warwick Business School Alumni Association, and the London Business School Alumni Association in the United Kingdom.
Fawzy started out as a foreign exchange analyst with NCR UK Limited and then move to Svenska Handelsbanken in the City of London as a risk analyst on their SWAPS and Derivatives desk in London. He then joined Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd in 1990 and worked primarily within the retail business. Fawzy was cross posted to Shell New Zealand Limited for 18 months in 1991. In 1997, he joined a small investment holding company, Wira Security Holdings Sdn Bhd as executive director and later on to Tajo Bhd as chief executive officer. In 2000, Fawzy joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as executive director and in 2002, Fawzy became the managing director and chief executive officer of Engen Limited, an integrated oil company in South Africa. He was appointed non-executive director of Energy Africa Limited (until January 2004), and was a member of the board of Governors of the South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA). Fawzy left Engen in June 2005. Fawzy was previously the CEO of MMM Bhd, a position that he has since left in January of 2007.
Shahnaz Al-Sadat Abdul Mohsein – Executive Director
Shahnaz Al-Sadat Abdul Mohsein holds an LLB (Hons.) degree from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. She is also a member of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA). She began her career in Arthur Andersen in Audit, Corporate Finance and Process Risk Consulting. Thereafter, she joined Malaysia Airlines Bhd. where she was General Manager, Internal Audit and a member of the Management Committee. She joined Khazanah Nasional in August 2004 as Director and Chief Financial Officer.
In 2007, Shahnaz took a one-year sabbatical from Khazanah to pursue the MBA programme at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Nungsari Ahmad Radhi – Executive Director, Research and Investment Strategy
Nungsari Ahmad Radhi joined Khazanah as Executive Director, Research and Investment Strategy in February 2007.
After ten years in academia, he resigned as Dean of the School of Economics at Universiti Utara Malaysia before winning a Parliamentary Seat in 1995. Besides representing the Malaysian Parliament in a number of international organisations, he was also a Board member of Bank Pertanian Malaysia, Yayasan Pelajaran MARA and the National Library. Prior to joining Khazanah, he had a brief stint at Sime Darby Berhad and was an Associate Director of Innovation Associates before that. His areas of interest have been in industrial organisation, applied game theory and public economics. He also writes regularly for The Edge and the most recent book he edited is on New Challenges Facing Poverty Eradication and Rural Development (2005), another subject close to his heart. He holds a PhD from the Krannert School of Management, Purdue University.
Abdullah Abdul Hamid – Executive Director, Transformation Management Office and Special Projects
Abdullah Abdul Hamid was appointed Khazanah Nasional’s Executive Director, Investments in February 2006. Over the last 27 years, Abdullah has held several senior positions in the financial services and management consultancy sector including as President/Chief Operating Officer of the Malaysian Exchange for Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation Berhad and as Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of turnaround and management consulting firm Turnaround Managers Inc.. Abdullah had also previously held various management positions in United Engineers Malaysia, Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Ford Motor Company and IBM. Abdullah holds a Masters in Business Administration from Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, as well as, a Bachelor of Technology from Loughborough University of Technology, United Kingdom. Abdullah’s role in the Investment division is to primarily lead the Transformation Management Office that acts as the Secretariat of the Transformation Program for Government-Linked Companies.
Mohd Nadziruddin bin Mohd Basri – Director, Chief Financial Officer
Mohd Nadziruddin joined Khazanah as its Chief Financial Officer in June 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Economics from the London School of Economics and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He had been a Senior Manager with the Assurance and Business Advisory Division of Ernst & Young, when he was seconded to Malaysia Airlines in July 2001 to assist Management with the restructuring of the airline. He subsequently joined the airline as a permanent staff in April 2003 where his last position was Senior General Manager – Airport Operations.
Hjh Jamilah binti Dato’ Hj Hashim – Director, Corporate & Support Services
Jamilah joined Khazanah as Director in the Transformation Management Office in October 2006. Over the last 21 years, Jamilah has held 10 key positions in the operational and regional level in Goodyear. Her last role was Director of Business Process Improvement, in Goodyear Asia Pacific Region after serving as the Manufacturing Director and Board member of Goodyear Malaysia Berhad. She had served in several key turnaround roles in Goodyear, along with driving the Goodyear Asia Pacific Region Women-In-Leadership process, as its resident. Jamilah had been the first female in the Asia Pacific region in all the positions she held in Goodyear and first female in Goodyear internationally, in 4 of her roles in Goodyear. Jamilah had also held management position in the Malaysian Palm oil Council as well as research position in the Solar Energy Research Institute, USA. Besides her executive education in the University of Michigan, University of Virginia and University of Pennsylvania, Jamilah holds a Masters of Science from University of Denver and Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from California State University.
Fares Zahir– Director, Head of Research
Fares joined Khazanah Nasional in March 2005 as Director, Head of Research, Khazanah Research and Investment Strategy. He was previously Director, UBS Investment Research at UBS Investment Bank based in Malaysia from 1999 to 2005. Prior to that, Fares was a fund manager with an associate company of Schroder Investment Management in Kuala Lumpur for three years and in the preceding two years, he served as an Investment Analyst for the Schroder Group. He started his career in Malaysia in the Actuarial Department of American International Assurance Co. Ltd. in 1992. Fares holds a Bachelor of Economics Degree in Actuarial Studies from Macquarie University in Australia and a Master in Operations Research from University Technology Sydney. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and Associate of the Society of Actuaries of North America.
Abu Bakar Ibrahim – Director, Khazanah Research and Investment Strategy
Abu Bakar Ibrahim was appointed as Director of Khazanah Nasional in January 2008, and is responsible for all AgriFood-based subsidiaries of the company.
Prior to Khazanah, Bakar was involved in several personal- and family-owned businesses in property development, construction and retail sectors. In his last position, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of an Oil and Gas services company, focusing on the Upstream sector.
Bakar attended United World College in Victoria, Canada and later in 1977, to Imperial College, London where he read Chemical Engineering. He followed this with an MSc in Management Science from Cranfield Institute of Technology, United Kingdom in 1980. Upon his return to Malaysia, he joined Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn. Bhd. in 1983 which took him to various positions in the Downstream Oil & Gas sector throughout Malaysia, including postings to Shell UK and Shell Indonesia, when he left the organisation in 1996.
Shahridan Faiez – Director, Khazanah Research & Investment Strategy
Shahridan joined Khazanah Nasional in November 2006 as Director, Khazanah Research & Investment Strategy. Prior to joining Khazanah, Shahridan was a senior technical specialist at the World Bank based in Washington DC. There, he managed World Bank financed projects in Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, East Africa and Southeast Asia. Shahridan is a keen promoter of sustainable development and has applied his expertise in such diverse places as the mountain villages of the Caucasus, fishing communities in the swamplands of Sumatera, and the Ministry of Finance of Kyrgyzstan. Shahridan has a degree in Geology from the University of Malaya. He also obtained a Masters and PhD degree in natural resource management from the University of Cambridge. During his spare time he likes to ruminate on the ultimate marketing challenge – how to promote the durian in the global marketplace.
Azman Mohd Hussein – Director, Human Capital Management
Azman Hussein joined Khazanah Nasional Bhd. in June 2005 as Vice President, Human Capital Management and was promoted to Director, Human Capital Management in September 2007.
Azman has been a human resources professional for more than 20 years and has wide experience in various aspects of HR. He started his career in Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd. upon graduating from University of Texas, Austin in 1985 with a degree in Geophysics and a minor in Mathematics. In 1988, Azman was part of the start-up team at Celcom Bhd., a Malaysian mobile telecommunications company, where he helped set up the Human Resource and Administration division. He was also instrumental in conceptualising, implementing and managing Celcom Academy, which was responsible for all learning and development activities in the Celcom group of companies.
Azman further enriched his career as an experiential learning facilitator, an HR consultant, a learning specialist and the lead HR consultant for an organisational review project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2003. He continued his corporate experience as Head, Learning & Development at the Malaysian Securities Commission in 2004 before joining Khazanah.
Dr Sr Iskandar Ismail – Director, Special Project
After leaving MCKK in 1977, Dr Iskandar went to Norwich City College and later to Reading University, where he obtained his Degree in Land Management, Masters in Urban Land Appraisal and Ph.D in Property Management. After twenty years in the Valuation and Property Services Dept in the Ministry of Finance, including the Assistant Director-General’s post, he left to join Regroup Associates, an international property consulting practice, as a Director. He left practice in 2004 to become a Director within Johor Corp, advising on property matters. Dr Iskandar Ismail is active in professional bodies related to the Built Environment, and is a Fellow of the Institution of Surveyors Malaysia.
Abdul Farid Alias – Director, Investments
Abdul Farid Alias graduated with a B.Sc. in Accounting and minor in Economics from the Pennsylvania State University in the United States. He subsequently obtained his MBA in Finance from the University of Denver, Colorado. Abdul Farid has spent 13 years of his career in investment banking, starting from Aseambankers, in its Corporate Finance division. He subsequently joined Schroders when they set up their office in Malaysia in 1994. He then joined Malaysian International Merchant Bankers as its Head of Capital Markets and Business Development before joining JPMorgan in 1997. In JPMorgan, he spent most of his time in Investment Banking in Malaysia, and was briefly sent to the Equity Capital Markets team in Singapore in 2001. After more than 7 years with JPMorgan, Abdul Farid joined Khazanah Nasional as Director, Investments in March 2005.
Elakumari Kantilal - Director, Investments
Elakumari Kantilal holds a Master of Science in Finance and Accounting from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Accounting from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She has also been a Member of the MIA since 1984. She began her career in the Accountant General's Office in 1981 with her first posting to the Ministry of Agriculture and progressed as a Senior Officer in the Division on Monitoring of Government owned Enterprise in the Ministry of Finance. She joined Khazanah Nasional in 1994 and is currently a Director of Investments, responsible for Investment Monitoring.
Dr. Kamarulzaman Mohamed Zin - Director, Investments
Dr. Kamarulzaman Mohamed Zin joined Khazanah Nasional as Director, Investments Division in March 2008.
Prior to Khazanah, Dr. Kamarulzaman was a Vice President for Technology at the Sapura Group, a Malaysian conglomerate with interests in ICT, Oil and Gas, Automotive, Education and Defence. At Sapura where he served since 1995, Dr. K worked and led teams in Systems Architecting, Development and Integration for major customers in the region. Passionately believing that technology is a key enabler for economic growth, he has developed and continuously worked on strategies and methodologies for technology acquisition and diffusion.
Dr Kamarulzaman has a background in Physics & Semiconductor Devices and obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London.
Shahazwan Harris – Director, Investments
Shahazwan Harris was appointed as Khazanah Nasional’s Director, Investments in May 2007. Most of his work in Khazanah has been in the infrastructure and utilities sectors and was part of the team which bid, closed and executed the Shuaiba 3 IWPP in Saudi Arabia. Shahazwan joined Khazanah Nasional in 2004 from The Boston Consulting Group, where he was a consultant working extensively in the regional energy sector. He has also worked previously with PA Consulting and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. He holds a MSc. in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, UK and a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Warwick University, UK.
Shahzad Bhatti – Director, Investments
Shahzad Bhatti was appointed as a Director, Investments Division at Khazanah Nasional in September 2007. Prior to joining Khazanah, Shahzad was the founder and CEO of the SAB Group, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based consulting firm, specialising in negotiations, leadership development and communications strategies.
As head of the SAB Group, Shahzad worked and consulted on transactions worth more than US$10 billion. His clients are represented from over 100 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, more than 45 governments, numerous charitable and pro bono causes, among others. During his tenure at the SAB Group, Shahzad instituted policies requiring every consultant to dedicate 30 days a year to pro bono causes, refused to work with clients who violated a strict morals clause and, concurrently, drove the SAB Group to between 50% and 100% year-on-year growth until joining Khazanah.
While at the SAB Group, Shahzad took a sabbatical to take over a money-losing internet start-up, Four Corners Technologies (which owned and managed Website.com). After turning around Four Corners with 18 consecutive months of growing profitability, Shahzad (and his partners) sold Website.com for what was then the highest post-crash domain sale.
Prior to the SAB Group, Shahzad served as an instructor of negotiation at Harvard Law School. He also spent a year as a transactional attorney at Yanagida & Nomura in Tokyo and another year as a corporate litigator at Morrison & Foerster in Washington, DC.
Shahzad obtained a JD in 1997 from Harvard Law School, where he was an International Law Fellow, an MPA in 2006 from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he was a columnist for the Citizen and an AB from Columbia University in 1994 where he earned degrees in Economics-Political Science and Biochemistry. At Columbia, Shahzad was elected captain of the track team and also served as Fellow at the Center for the Study of Human Rights.
Shahzad wrote the book The Impact of Foreign Investment on the Economic Development of Malaysia and has been featured in a number of media outlets, including the BBC, NPR, Bloomberg and The Washington Post, discussing topics ranging from negotiation to international relations to Islam.
Tunku Ali Redhauddin Muhriz - Director, Investments
Tunku Ali Redhauddin Muhriz was appointed Director, Investments, Khazanah Nasional Berhad in January 2008. He joined Khazanah in 2004 and has been involved in both the GLC Transformation Programme and various Investments projects, specifically the financial services sector, such as Asia Capital Reinsurance Ltd and Lippo Bank. He also sits on the Board of Asia Capital Reinsurance Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Tunku Ali is presently working with teams exploring investment opportunities in Vietnam, and in the Tourism sector. Prior to joining Khazanah, Tunku Ali was a consultant with McKinsey & Company. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Cambridge.
Ahmad Shahizam b. Mohd Shariff – Director, Managing Director’s Office
Ahmad Shahizam was promoted to Director in the Managing Director’s Office in May 2007. Prior to this, he was the Senior Vice President in the same Office, with responsibilities over all aspects of external and internal communications under the Communications and External Relations Unit. Ahmad joined Khazanah Nasional in July 2004 as Special Officer to the Managing Director, from HSBC Malaysia where he was the Head of Islamic Capital Markets. In 2000, he joined Salomon Smith Barney in Kuala Lumpur, where he was a Vice President in the equity research division, covering the utilities, infrastructure, plantations and property sectors. In 1996, he was at ING Barings as an equity investment analyst. Ahmad started his career in 1994 at HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad as Resident Manager, after graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Ahmad is presently on a one-year sabbatical at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, where he is pursuing a Masters in Public Administration, under the Mid-Career Mason Fellows Programme.
Wong Shu Hsien – Director, Managing Director’s Office
Wong Shu Hsien was promoted to Director, Managing Director’s Office in June 2008 where she was previously the Senior Vice President, Strategic Management Unit. Shu Hsien has a background in private equity, and worked for one of the largest private equity funds in the region, based in Singapore. She started her career as a Kuala Lumpur-based research analyst with UBS, and subsequently moved to a similar role at Salomon Smith Barney. Shu Hsien read Economics at Cambridge University and has a Masters in Economics from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. She is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Aini Haryati Jamaludin- Director, Transformation Management Office
Aini Haryati joined Khazanah in February 2005 as Head, Programme Management for the Managing Director’s Office. Upon the launch of the GLC Transformation Programme (GLCT) in July 2005, Aini Haryati was assigned to set up the Transformation Management Office (TMO) and lead its programme management functions. TMO acts as the Secretariat for the Putrajaya Committee on GLC High Performance (PCG).
Aini Haryati has been involved in managing transformation efforts for two government owned institutions. Her last position was Director of Corporate Services with Bank Simpanan Nasional.
An Advocate & Solicitor of the High Courts of Malaya, Aini Haryati started her career as a corporate advisory and banking litigation lawyer. Aini Haryati holds a Law Degree from Nottingham University, and was awarded the Raja Azlan Shah Lord Chief Justice prize for outstanding contribution. She has also been admitted by the Inns of Courts as Barrister-at-Law, England & Wales.
